Dancing Through Life: A New Age of Dance Styles in Theater

Dates: Monday, June 22 and Tuesday, 23. This is a two day workshop.

Time: 6:00 -8:30pm both days.

Ages: Ages 15 through Adult

Musical Theatre is ever-changing, shifting, and modernizing, meaning that as performers, we have to keep up. Over this two-day course, we will dive into different dance styles emerging in today’s theatre world by dancing through the styles that are beginning to shape new works. Prepare to MOVE through styles such as Jazz, Musical Theatre, Jazz Funk, Hip-Hop, and Contemporary, and come out on the other side with plenty of dance material prepared for dance reels, self-tapes, prescreens, auditions, and more!

 

All Participants should come prepared to dance and move. Please wear clothes you are comfortable doing so in and bring desired shoes for the dance styles mentioned above. 

 

Merely Instructor:

Ava Allen was raised in Durango and it’s where she discovered her love for the arts. She is currently a sophomore in the BFA Musical Theater Major at Point Park in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. Ava was a Competition Dancer for 8+ years competing in styles such as Hip-hop, Contemporary, Jazz, Lyrical, Ballet, and Musical Theater. She has been a choreographer for 4 years, creating pieces for productions, auditions,classes and more. She has been lucky enough to be part of a few productions with Merely Players in the past and her most recent roles consist of Janis (Mean Girls); Countess Lily (Anastasia); Little Becky Two Shoes (Urinetown); Essie (You Can’t Take it With You); and Persephone (Hadestown: Teen Edition).

when we do laugh, we know. Through the delivery of a perfectly worded

line, a prat fall, a funny voice, a ridiculous walk, the absurd, the preposterous, or even the deadpan slow burn straight to the audience: in

theatre, comedy waits around every unexpected corner. Explaining comedy is hard. Try describing your favorite SNL sketch to a friend. Performing it is even harder. It takes discipline, dedication, timing, and the courage to be gloriously dumb. SERIOUS Comedy is your backstage pass to unlocking the technique.
